"Kon-ni-chi-wa!"

Hi, I am Miki Sensei (teacher).

My very first experience of teaching Japanese was to my Israeli roommate at the dormitory when I was a teenager.

Me and my roommate were talking to each other about the words and phrases in our languages. Talking about how to count numbers in Japanese, I realized for the first time that the language I know by nature interests foreign people by its uniqueness. I tried to explain her rationally how to count in Japanese, like "11=10+1=Jū-ichi, 111=100+11=Hyaku-jū-ichi" . She, in the end, understood the concept and we counted numbers till midnight just as we do in the bed counting sheep.

Although long time has passed since then, I still remember the excitement of sharing different ideas we have in our languages with my roommate. Whenever I teach Japanese to foreign students I try to figure the most interesting, accurate and clear way of teaching for the ease of their understanding. At the same time, I would stand in a position of each student who has different culture, views and languages.

Studying languages requires us to climb many mountains on the way.

For the students who climb a mountain of "Japanese", I would like to hold their hands tight and guide with a big smile till they reach their own summits.

I hope to see you soon.
